The past vs. The Present vs. The Future

http://successwithcorey.com/
Something my friend said sparked me to write this. Some people Dwell in the past, while some ponder the future, but who really lives there life for the now? Don't get me wrong dreaming about the future is a great thing and it needs to be done but don't focus all of your energy on the past or the future.

For example: If you ever have known someone to go to rehab they don't say focus on being sober for a year, or a month, or even a week. They tell you to focus on being sober TODAY, right now. Not tomorrow.

Babatunde Olatunji said "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift. That's why we call it the present." A good friend of mine once said,"Yesterday is history tomorrow does NOT have to be a mystery if we treat today like the gift it is. That my friends is why we call it the present." The point being why focus on yesterday when its over with. I've come to accept my past because I realize it made me who I am today. Some things may be bad some may be good but without those events I wouldn't have lived the life I did. What happened happened and you cant go back so why focus on something you can't change? Today is the only thing you can change which will directly affect your future. They always say "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". All you have to do is eat an apple TODAY to ensure that in the future you will be healthy. Maintain eating an apple everyday and your future will be bright and healthy. Today is what truly matters to us so lets take hold of our today so our future is what we want it to be.

Im not saying don't make goals and plan your future, That is a necessity. Dreaming is a necessity. Just spend more time on your today then you do your tomorrow. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "What lies behind us and what lies before us is nothing compared to what lies within us." I think this is relevant because the past is gone, the future isn't here, and our present is what truly matters.

I hope I got the point across that TODAY is truly where we need to live. One today equals two tomorrows. Remember that and treat everyday like its your last and you will live a fulfilled life. If you live everyday to its fullest I can guarantee your future will give you what you want.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

I completely agree to this 110%. I'll admit that I focus on both my past and my future more than I focus on today and it's what makes it hard for me to actually get by. I'm too worried about everything else rather than what I have TODAY. I appreciate your writing and you help me day to day with the things you say/have said to me. I just want to thank you for helping me live for TODAY. <3

You're gonna find this metaphor funny...

You know what I just realized by reading this? I always posted so many pictures of events... and possessions on my MySpace page. I was always accused of "bragging" through my pictures.... but I said no. That isnt it... I swear.. there's another reason I put these up. But I cant explain it. It's not bragging. Its something else.

But you just explained it Corey,,,
I focused on my past a lot. I laid my past out in organized images and reminded myself every day of what things used to be and werent anymore. There are few "present" pictures... and even fewer that portray what i want in my future. Why is it that I am addicted to the past? I dont think its totally unhealthy to remember your past, but why dwell on it? And when I look at those pictures I think "I hate where I'm at now... or who I'm with now..." When I should be thinking "What is it today I do love and appreciate having?"

Yeah people think of the past and dwell on it in many ways, but it just hit me that that was my way of doing so.

I solely concur with your sentiments, no day is more important than the currunt one. You can do a lot presently than having to post-pone to an indefinite time and/or day. Though am 100% guilty of lapsing to the habit of focusing to the past and the future without giving much consideration to now, the gift, the present, I know the power of giving the now, 100% focus can result at.
